Many naysayers are not convinced that electric vehicles are the future of automotive transport. There are often three central myths that are retold among experts about electric vehicles.
But they’re wrong.
In this month’s blog, we will discuss the top three myths about electric vehicles and why they are going to continue growing within the automotive industry.
They’re hard to repair.
This myth is simply untrue. According to auto repair shops that service electric vehicles regularly, they claim that EVs are relatively easy to repair. The central systems that need regular maintenance and service include:
- Brakes
- Tires
- Suspension
There are fewer moving parts on an electric vehicle, which means fewer mechanical components can replace. We have spoken with many auto repair shop owners who agree that, yes, EVs are the future. It is essential to gain as much training around electric vehicles because those skills will be necessary for repair shops as the technology evolves and more EVs are manufactured.
It’s tough to do a long road trip in them.
Many people complain that EVs do not have a long mileage range and difficult to take long drives. The battery technology for electric vehicles is improving rapidly, and the driving range expands with each new generation of EVs. Plus, the infrastructure of charging stations is still getting established. As auto manufacturers produce more vehicles, the infrastructure will catch up with more charging stations per capita. Currently, there are Tesla owners who have successfully made coast-to-coast road trips, and they did not have major issues traveling from station to station. Here’s a video of one cross-country road trip:
Electric vehicles are expensive.
Some claim that electric vehicles are expensive, but we challenge that myth by saying it’s all about perspective. If you look at a base model EV to a comparable base model gas-powered vehicle, yes, the electric vehicle may have a higher price tag. However, when you factor in the maintenance costs, the vehicle’s lifespan, fuel costs, carbon footprint, taxes, and resale value, the EVs are not as expensive as you might think. Our Switch Vehicle Electric Vehicle is a reusable kit used by STEM programs and automotive education programs to train students to assemble and repair EVs affordably.
At Switch Vehicles, we manufacture a fun, sporty, and safe Electric Vehicle created as a “build-it-yourself” kit for education. Our all-inclusive program is called The Switch Lab™ – which challenges students to build a full-size, road-worthy electric vehicle as a classroom project. Used in high schools, colleges, and junior high schools across the US, the program delivers high-quality project-based learning with real-world experience and impact. Founded in 2013, we practice what we teach with EV Kits manufactured in our Sebastopol, CA, shop.
Our reusable EV Kit is an ideal project that teaches students how to work with their hands, solve problems, learn about systems, and gain experience in cutting-edge automotive technology. To learn more about how Switch Vehicles can benefit your school, contact us today.
